Sierra Leoneans have happily endeared themselves to Tampa Bay, as their new home away from Africa. The similarities in tropical
climate, vegetation, and beautiful beaches, are some of the enticing aspects that make us feel so much at home.

In 2017 we decided it was time for us to organize ourselves into an association to promote our rich Sierra Leone culture
and traditions. We also believed that as a Diaspora, we can foster mutual support for our local community, while at the same time mobilize resources in responding to humanitarian, social, educational and developmental needs back in Sierra Leone.

Membership is open to persons of Sierra Leonean descent, residing in the greater Tampa Bay area; non -Sierra Leonean
spouses, and any well wisher interested in Sierra Leonean affairs.
The membership meets quarterly, when policies and programs are developed for the executive committee to implement.

Our Scholarship Program
On April 27, 2019, TBASL embarked on its first major event; a fund raising dinner and dance in Tampa, in honor of sponsoring students of Sierra Leone descent in Tampa Bay, as well as students pursuing post high school studies in Sierra Leone.
Our decision to focus on student education was due in part to the flagging literacy rate in Sierra Leone. According to World Bank data, the literacy rate in 2018 stands at 43.21%. Without an investment in education, Sierra Leone's development will remain stunted.
The fund raising event was a success. Profits from the dinner and dance as well as pledges to the scholarship fund brought in a total amount of $4154.

Our scholarship committee employed a meticulous and effective process in selecting deserving scholarship recipients from the four regions of Sierra Leone.
Without any overhead and administrative charges, we made sure that your donations were put into its intended use.
We do want to continue supporting the college costs of our Sierra Leone students until they complete their studies. April 2020 would have been our second annual fund raising event. We had to cancel the event due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We however invite you to use this alternative medium to make your donations towards the college fees of our students.
